During the past two years this magazine is leavened like a dough left next to the oven: new people, new ideas, new topics. So let’s celebrate one of the most basic foods in the world. What is bread? At its simplest it is merely a paste of flour or meal and water cooked over or surrounded by heat. Bread is a great source of energy. The dough is soft and unformed, which anyone can give the shape he wants.
It is widely believed that the domestication and cultivation of wheat and other grains directly influenced human transition from nomadic people to domesticated, stationary people.
Bread is a foodstuff of great historical and contemporary importance, in many cultures bread has a significance beyond mere nutrition. “Give us this day our daily bread“. The Roman poet Juvenal satirised superficial politicians and the public as caring only for “panem et circenses” (bread and circuses). In Israel the most usual phrase in work-related demonstrations is “lekhem, avoda” (bread, work). In Cockney rhyming slang, bread means money.
The cultural importance of bread goes beyond slang to serve as a metaphor for basic necessities and living conditions in general. In India, life’s basic necessities are often referred to as “roti, kapra aur makan” (bread, cloth and house). Since bread has this significance of necessity, we ask you to report what it’s for all of you your daily bread. So we are talking about food and more. So be original, be nostalgic, be creative. Be whole grain, Rather than plain white.
